1. About the School

To proactively adapt to the need for the urban rail transit development in Shanghai and nationwide, speed up the development of professionals in urban rail transit, and implement the great strategy of invigorating China through science and education, Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) and Shanghai Metro Operation Co., Ltd. (now known as Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd.) have decided to leverage their respective strengths to establish an industry-university-research cooperation alliance. On January 22, 2005, they jointly founded the School of Urban Rail Transportation, Shanghai University of Engineering Science, and organized the council, academic committee and program committee of the School. Currently, the School offers 4 undergraduate programs, which are: Vehicle Engineering (Rail Transit Vehicle), Rail Transit Signals and Control, Transport (Urban Rail Transit Operation Management), and Railway Engineering; 1 academic postgraduate program: Vehicle Engineering; and 1 professional postgraduate program: Transport. The school has some 1680 enrolled students.

With the support of Shanghai Municipal Government and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd., the School management team and its industry partners have established great school-enterprise cooperation. Relying on the first-class school-running concept, scientific teaching systems, elite faculty and well-equipped training facilities, the School has become a key talent training center in support of the development of local economy and the urban rail transit industry. Supported by the University, the School joined hands with Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. to apply for and was approved to be a national engineering practical education center, one of the first pilot units for cultivating excellent engineers of the Ministry of Education, one of the 10 demonstration bases of college students off-campus internship in Shanghai, and a demonstration center of experimental teaching in Shanghai, etc., achieving joint school-running, resource sharing and seamless connection between the university and the enterprise.  

2. Features of School-running

The School has worked with the industry to establish the Synergy Mode in talent development, school running and innovation featuring the industry-university cooperative education mode, excellent engineering education mode and top innovative talent development platform, attracted quality students, ensured recruitment scale, established the teacher practicing system on regular secondment in the metro company, implemented the internal and external exchange strategy and guaranteed teachers' level and teaching quality. Aiming at the overall goal of building a university with modern engineering application characteristics, the School was founded in 2005, and after three stages of construction, development, and improvement, realized the comprehensive strategic cooperation based on the industry-university-research council structure between the SUES and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group Co., Ltd. The School takes initiative to serve the industrial economy of urban rail transit, and is open to the whole country with its base in Shanghai to cultivate senior application-oriented engineers required for urban rail transit O&M. Through the marriage between the School and the enterprise for mutual complementarity of advantages and collaborative talent cultivation, the School has built on-campus laboratories and off-campus internship bases, established the “three-in-one” and working-learning alternation training mode that integrates theory teaching in classroom, comprehensive training in laboratory and application and practicing on the production site.
