Graduate Training

TheSchool of Urban Rail Transportation was approved to award the degree in Transport in 2014 and the academic master’s degree in Traffic Engineering in 2018. Traffic Engineering is a characteristic discipline with advantages of Shanghai University of Engineering Science. The guiding ideology of the Professional Degree Master Program is to practice the engineering education concept of “embracing industry, embracing the world, embracing the future”. It is guided by social needs, with traffic engineering as the background. Focusing on engineering applications, the Program aims to train application-oriented, inter-disciplinary and high-level engineering technology and engineering management talents for transportation operation companies and the engineering construction sector, especially state-owned large and medium-sized enterprises. Using a unique training approach of “industry-academic cooperation, work-study rotation, and discipline/program chain matching industry/technology chain”, and “theory + technical practice + in-program application of new technology”, the Program delivers high-level application-oriented engineering and technical talents in the field of transportation operation safety assurance and management for China’s traffic engineering industry.

The discipline of Traffic Engineering adopts the model of “collaborative education, collaborative operation, and collaborative innovation” with the industry, and has established an Industry-University-Research strategic alliance with leading companies and public institutions in the rail transit, automobile and aviation industries. The Discipline joins hands with outstanding technical personnel with rich engineering experience to train high-quality, application-oriented innovative talents that meet the requirements of modern traffic engineering, and enhance students’ engineering literacy and engineering capabilities.

The discipline of Traffic Engineering has solid strength in scientific research and has achieved remarkable scientific research results. In the past five years, the Discipline has undertaken projects under the following programs and institutions: National Key Research and Development Program on New Energy Vehicles, National Natural Science Fund, Humanities and Social Sciences Youth Fund of the Ministry of Education, Open-End Fund of the State Key Laboratory of High Speed Railway Track Technology, Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, Shanghai Natural Science Fund, Shanghai Local Capacity Building, etc. The Discipline has won the following awards: 3 third prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, second prize of Science and Technology Award of China Occupational Safety and Health Association, second prize of the 16th China International Industry Fair, second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of China Railway Shanghai Bureau Group Co., Ltd., first prize of Scientific and Technological Innovation in Highway Engineering of China Highway Construction Association, and second prize of China International Industry Fair. The research results of the Discipline have contributed to the development of science and technology and economic growth of China, particularly Shanghai.

Outstanding results have been achieved in terms of educational facilities, faculty development, talent training, enrollment and employment, providing strong support for the rapid and sustainable development of China’s transportation industry. Numerous scientific research achievements and outstanding graduates have gradually demonstrated the industry influence of the Degree Program. The increasing demand from the industry has prompted the gradual expansion of enrollment. Intelligent maintenance and intelligent transportation operations have created a demand for new types of engineering and technical personnel. The Degree Program is continuing to introduce high-level talents as faculty teachers, step up efforts to build on-campus experimental platforms and enterprise practice bases that meet the requirements of new technology development, and further improve the quality and competence of students. The Degree Program is undergoing healthy development.

The program of Traffic Engineering currently has 45 postgraduate supervisors, including 26 faculty members with senior professional titles, 2 national experts under the Thousand Talents Program, and 42 faculty members with doctoral degrees. Faculty members with senior professional titles account for 57.8%. There are currently 105 part-time supervisors from companies, all of whom are senior technicians who are from traffic engineering-related industries, have graduate degrees or senior professional titles and rich engineering experience.

The Traffic Engineering Degree Program attaches great importance to the professional practice of professional degree graduate students. Professional practice can be carried out according to requirements in Industry-University-Research practice bases as partners of the University. Alternatively, under the guidance of relevant departments of the University, it is possible to make overall plans in a coordinated way and actively establish various practice bases or joint training bases with companies and public institutions. The Degree Program trains professional degree graduate students according to the actual needs of employers and provides long-term, stable practice bases for them.

The Degree Program focuses on cultivating graduate students’ practical and innovative ability and encouraging and supporting them to participate in various academic projects and competitions. The graduate students of the Discipline have won the following awards: National Post-Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling: 14 national second prizes, and 23 national third prizes; National English Competition for College Students: 2 national first prizes, 2 national second prizes, and 4 national third prizes; Graduate Contest on Smart-city Technology and Creative Design: 1 national third prize, 2 national third prizes, and 1 Shanghai third prize; The National Graduate Electronics Design Contest: 1 national first prize, 4 national third prizes, 10 Shanghai second prizes, and 5 Shanghai third prizes.
